Microsoft hands over BitLocker keys to FBI, exposing users to major privacy flaw

Microsoft handed over BitLocker recovery keys to the FBI after it was served with a valid warrant, exposing Windows users’ privacy. The disclosure comes after an FBI investigation in Guam, where Microsoft supplied encryption keys to unlock three suspects’ laptops in a Guam fraud case. Federal investigators in Guam believed the laptops included information that would prove individuals in charge of the island’s COVID-19 unemployment aid program were involved in a scheme to embezzle money. Microsoft BitLocker key disclosure sparks global privacy concerns Microsoft provided the recovery keys to FBI investigators because the data was protected with BitLocker. This software protects all of the data on the computer’s hard disk and is automatically activated on many contemporary Windows PCs. Data is jumbled by BitLocker so that only those with the key can decipher it. Although users can keep their keys on a personal device, Microsoft advises BitLocker customers to store their keys on its servers for easier management. This puts people at risk of lawsuits and law enforcement warrants, even though it also means they can access their data if they forget their password or lock the device after multiple unsuccessful login attempts. The Redmond, Washington corporation has never before given law enforcement an encryption key, as far as is known, until the Guam case, where it handed over the encryption keys to investigators. However, Microsoft confirmed that it does offer BitLocker recovery keys in the event of a legitimate court order. “While key recovery offers convenience, it also carries a risk of unwanted access, so Microsoft believes customers are in the best position to decide… how to manage their keys,” -Charles Chamberlayne, Microsoft spokesperson. Chamberlayne added that Microsoft receives about 20 requests for BitLocker keys annually. In many of these cases, customers have not saved their keys in the cloud, leaving the company unable to assist. However, handing over the keys to law enforcement sparked privacy concerns. In a statement made by Senator Ron Wyden to Forbes, it is “simply irresponsible for tech companies to ship products in a way that allows them to turn over users’ encryption keys secretly. He went on to say that allowing ICE or other Trump thugs to steal a user’s encryption keys puts users’ and their families’ personal safety and security at risk and gives them access to the user’s entire digital existence. This problem is not limited to the United States. The ACLU’s surveillance and cybersecurity counsel, Jennifer Granick, noted that countries with questionable human rights records also request data from tech giants like Microsoft. She added that storing decryption keys remotely can be very risky. One participant on Hacker News claimed that the problem was that Microsoft already had those keys. If the key is accessible and free to use, what good is encryption? iCloud Email is the same, the user added. The user also argued that human-made laws and regulations cannot provide privacy because they are abused and subject to change. The source of privacy is mathematics, which disregards rules and regulations. Global governments push tech companies for encryption backdoors Law enforcement frequently requests encryption keys, backdoor access, or other security flaws from computer corporations. Apple has been repeatedly asked for access to encrypted data in its cloud or on its devices. In October of last year, the UK government renewed its confrontation with Apple over access to customer data. The government demanded a backdoor into the tech company’s cloud storage servers, targeting only British users. In a widely reported confrontation with the government in 2016, Apple resisted an FBI order to assist in opening the phones of terrorists who shot and killed 14 people in San Bernardino, California. In the end, the FBI managed to get a contractor to breach the iPhones. In a separate report in April of last year, Florida lawmakers unanimously approved a draft bill that would mandate that social media companies provide law enforcement officers with access to user accounts through encryption backdoors. XRP Validators Vote YES On Permissionless Domains – What This Means

The XRP Ledger has moved one step closer to a major structural upgrade after validators voted in favor of Permissioned Domains. The amendment has now entered its two-week activation window, which is the standard process on the network before new features go live. The change may sound technical on the surface, but it carries implications for how XRP-based infrastructure could be used by institutions operating under regulatory frameworks. Validators Vote Yes On Permissioned Domains According to commentary shared on X by Vincent Van Code, the amendment introducing Permissioned Domains has received enough validator support to pass. Vincent Van Code is a widely followed software engineer in the community. Amendments on the XRP ledger require sustained validator consensus before activation, meaning this approval reflects alignment across a large portion of the network’s validator set. Particularly, amendments on the XRP Ledger require over 80% consensus from trusted validators to hold for two consecutive weeks before activating. This process ensures network-wide agreement, preventing forced changes by any single entity. If support drops below the 80% threshold, the amendment is temporarily rejected, and the two-week period restarts. As it stands, the consensus on permissioned domains is at 85.29%, and the expected time of approval is on February 4, 2026. Once the two-week waiting period concludes, the permissioned domains feature will become active at the protocol level. This means developers and institutions will no longer be building applications through off-chain workarounds or private chains. Developers will now be able to start building applications that rely on controlled access rules directly on the public XRP ledger. How Permissioned Domains Change What Can Be Built On XRPL According to the XRP Ledger website , permissioned domains are controlled environments within the broader ecosystem of the XRP Ledger blockchain. Anyone can define a permissioned domain in the ledger. That person becomes the owner of that domain and can update its settings or delete it. Permissioned Domains introduce a way to create gated environments on the XRP Ledger, where participation is limited to accounts holding specific verifiable credentials. Instead of every address being treated equally by default, certain activities can now be restricted to verified participants only, without altering the open nature of the base ledger. According to Vincent Van Code, this unlocks institutional use cases by restricting access to accounts with specific verifiable credentials. This capability opens the door to permissioned decentralized exchanges where regulated trading of tokenized securities, stablecoins, real-world assets, and even FX instruments can occur among compliant counterparties. The same framework also supports controlled lending protocols, restricted liquidity pools, and treasury operations that only approved entities can access. The vote on permissioned domains plays into a growing trend of institutional entry into the XRP Ledger. While talking at the World Economic Forum in Davos 2026, Ripple’s CEO discussed increasing integration of the XRP Ledger technology with global financial infrastructure, including stronger engagement with banking partners and tokenization efforts.

Meta freezes teen AI access pending safer redesign

Meta announced it is disabling all teens’ access to its AI characters worldwide on every app. “Starting in the coming weeks, teens will no longer be able to access AI characters across our apps until the updated experience is ready,” wrote Meta in a blog post. The company stated in an updated blog post that this rule covers anyone who provided a teen birthday and those who say they are adults but are suspected to be teens by their age prediction technology. Meta stopped access when parents demanded clearer information and control over their teens’ AI interactions. The company planned to release these features this year but has decided to disable AI characters completely. Meta plans age-specific AI characters The company aims to create a special AI character just for teens. Meta stated that the new AI characters for teens will include parental controls. The new characters will provide age-appropriate replies and focus on education, sports, and hobbies. In October, Meta introduced parental controls to customize how teens engage with AI on its apps. The new features limited teens from viewing extreme violence, nudity, and graphic drug use, inspired by the PG-13 rating. A few days later, the company introduced tools for managing AI characters, so parents and guardians can track subjects and restrict access to specific characters. Meta stated that parents could fully disable chats with AI characters. On Thursday, Wired stated that Meta tried to restrict information gathering about social media’s effects on teen mental health and related reports. The company wants to remove any mention of a recent teen suicide case linked to social media, and references to Meta’s finances, employee activities, and Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard years. Meta’s move to halt teen AI characters occurs just before a trial in New Mexico, where Meta faces charges for failing to protect children on its apps. Its alleged that Meta did not safeguard minors against online solicitation, trafficking, and sexual abuse on its sites. Meta stated in pretrial motions that the jury should only decide if Meta broke New Mexico’s Unfair Practices Act concerning child safety and youth mental health. Other issues like alleged election interference, misinformation, or privacy violations should not be considered. Besides the New Mexico case, Meta is facing a trial next week for causing social media addiction. The 19-year-old plaintiff, known as K.G.M., claimed that the platforms’ algorithm caused addiction and harmed her mental health. CEO Mark Zuckerberg is likely to testify once the trial starts. Online platforms tighten teen access Social media platforms and AI companies have changed their teen experience due to lawsuits claiming they contributed to self-harm. On January 20, OpenAI introduced age prediction features in ChatGPT to detect and enhance safeguards for younger users. ChatGPT’s age prediction model analyzes behavioral and account data, such as the user’s stated age, account age, activity times, and usage trends. Last week, TikTok introduced AI technology in Europe to detect and delete accounts of users under 13 years old. The AI age control system examines profile details, clips, and posting habits to identify underage accounts. The feature will roll out in the coming weeks. Lenovo aims to become an AI leader through multi-model partnerships At the 2026 World Economic Forum in Davos, Lenovo Group’s Chief Financial Officer, Winston Cheng, detailed the company’s plan to become a leader in the global artificial intelligence (AI) market. Instead of creating its own AI models, Lenovo is striking deals with the world’s top developers to power its next generation of devices. Through partnering with multiple firms, Lenovo aims to navigate complex global regulations and provide regional AI solutions that work within its massive ecosystem of Windows and Android devices, unlike competitors like Apple, which currently limits its AI integrations to OpenAI and Google’s Gemini. Lenovo is calling its strategy the “orchestrator approach.” According to its CFO Winston Cheng, the company does not want to compete with model developers.
